Most children are taught the difference between the wrong and right and are raised as children to abide by the laws and rules set by the state, local and federal government and society. Many people grow up following these lessons and can follow the guidelines of the law. There are cases where a person in society will not follow the rule, whether major or minor.

Small offenses like failing to yield the right-of-way, speeding and moving violations are considered as civil breaches, and normally end up in traffic fines and tickets. The person may go through suspension of driver’s license if the person is found to have broken the law repeatedly or failed to pay the fines, but such breaches rarely end up in jail time.

Other traffic violations like driving on a suspended license, driving without automobile insurance and other charges are considered as criminal charges and come under misdemeanor category. Incidental assault, driving with an open container and minor possessing alcohol is the other misdemeanors and these do not come under felony level.

Burglary, assault, battery, auto theft, robbery, and theft come under felony charges. These charges always include heavy fines and may also include criminal rehabilitation and incarceration. If an individual is charged under a felony, the person may be forced for surrendering of livelihood and follow the court orders.

Individuals charged with something that doesn’t need jail time have limited options than those who are charged with a felony offense. Persons with felony charges have the option to choose an attorney and may also choose a jury to defend themselves. A person facing misdemeanor charges doesn’t have jail time, but he may not be able to call an attorney and face not more than six-person jury if the case ends up in the trial.
